Meet Alma: Proof that your IT career education doesn’t have to ‘move at the speed of dial-up'

Many people would roll over and give up. But that wasn’t Alma Dunning’s reaction.

Instead, she decided to make a life-changing move and enroll at ACI Learning to train for a career in IT.

“I watched my husband and my sister,” Dunning said. “They both work in IT and they were super happy. I wanted a piece of that happiness. I decided to take some classes and step into that field.”

Dunning trained for five weeks at the ACI Learning Tech Academy in Denver, Colorado. She was a student in the Computer User Support Specialist program. This includes training for the ITIL®, CompTIA A+, Network+ and Security+ certifications which are globally recognized in the field of IT.

After her training courses concluded, Dunning worked with the ACI Learning Career Services team. This team specializes in helping ACI Learning students land jobs with their newly developed skills.

“Career Services did a great job connecting me with local job opportunities. They scheduled weekly meetings with me, we revamped my resume, updated my LinkedIn profile. A few days later I was getting phone calls for interviews.”

When she compares life before and after ACI Learning, it goes from “super stressful” to “couldn’t be better.” Dunning says she is in an “amazing” IT position with a large healthcare organization and she is “loving it.”

“I am IT help desk support and I assist users from doctors to students to fellow employees with their IT support needs.”

She credits ACI Learning for quickly preparing her well for the new role and encourages others with a desire to start a career in IT to “just do it.”
